Research & Focus Areas
Stanford CHOICE drives innovation across the full spectrum of endoscopic care — from device conception and prototyping through clinical validation and training dissemination. Our research is organized around key focus areas that represent the most impactful opportunities to improve patient outcomes.
Our Focus Areas
Novel Device
Development
Designing and engineering next-generation endoscopic instruments and platforms through collaboration between clinicians and engineers. Projects in this area leverage Stanford’s biodesign methodology to move from clinical need identification through prototyping, testing, and regulatory strategy.
Third-Space
Endoscopy
Advancing techniques in submucosal endoscopy, including peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), and emerging submucosal tunneling procedures. CHOICE aims to refine these techniques for improved safety, efficacy, and broader adoption globally.
Training Science
& Simulation
Innovating how endoscopic skills are taught and assessed through simulation technology, competency-based curricula, and objective performance metrics. CHOICE develops evidence-based training frameworks that can be scaled globally.
Outcomes Research
& Quality
Conducting rigorous clinical studies to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and cost-effectiveness of new endoscopic interventions. This area also encompasses quality improvement initiatives and development of standardized outcome measures.
